With my being at home more, we decided to put Aaron into the school at our church, which is literally just across the yard. It is a much smaller (in terms of hours) school, but is much more focused on education and discipline - two things that were lacking in his "old" school.
At first he was not too sure and the first day, sitting in the hall amongst all those kids waiting to go to their classes, was a bit overwhelming. I stayed near, but he did just fine. It was just a different experience. Before, kids would show up whenever their parents brought them as it was as much a daycare as a school. So as each child arrived, they would simply go wherever their age class was at the time.
Here, there are specified times and they do everything together as a class. For the parents there is a much more scheduled day. We know pretty much what he is doing each day. They do a wonderful job of keeping the parents informed and believe, as I do, that the education of your child is not solely the responsibility of the school - the parents must be involved. To that end, this is a co-op and parents take turns participating each day in class and providing a treat while their child is the class leader for the day.
By the time the first couple days were over, he was just fine and showing off the things he had made in class - and showing the kids in his class where his house was as they passed it on their way to the playground.
We are supplementing what he is learning at school at home as well. I found a wonderful site (enchantedlearning.com) that has literally thousands of learning projects, crafts and games that we can do both online and printed out. He is doing very well we have "Learning Time" at home. His favorite thing to do are mazes and puzzles. A logical thinking and puzzle-solving little guy, he is. I couldn't be happier.
